Beaver Falls, PA – Geneva′s women′s basketball team anticipated the final week of the regular season to be its most difficult all year. After knocking off Notre Dame College on the road on Thursday for its 20th victory of the season, Geneva finished the regular season on an even bigger note by upsetting 15th ranked Daemen College and handing the AMC North champions their first loss of the year in the AMC North by the score of 58-48. The victory improved Geneva′s overall record to 21-4, including a final conference mark of 12-2.

Daemen had defeated Geneva by 20 points in Amherst, NY in mid-January, but on Saturday night, the Golden Tornadoes turned up their conference leading defense to another level and held the Wildcats 30 points under their season average. “Without question the big difference tonight was our defense,” said head coach Ron Galbreath. “We played with a great deal of confidence and our ladies took their game to another level. Hopefully each of our player now realizes that we can play with any team in this league, which is a huge advantage heading into the conference tournament.”

Geneva will open its post-season run on Wednesday night at home against Houghton College, a team that Geneva swept a pair of games from earlier in the season.

On Saturday night, Geneva opened a 28-19 lead heading into the locker room and held Daemen′s powerful offense to just eight first half field goals. A three-point play from Michawn Rich with 10:47 remaining extended Geneva′s lead to a game high 13 points. Daemen twice got the margin back to six, but could not pull any closer.

Allyson Clarke led Geneva on the score sheet with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Jackie Anthony, who was playing her final regular season game on senior night, chipped in with 13 points. Michawn Rich added eight points and pulled down a team best 11 rebounds off the bench to help Geneva′s cause. The Golden Tornadoes only turned the ball over 12 times and held Daemen′s offense to 31% shooting from the field for the game. “This team is a national caliber opponent,” said Galbreath. “We had to get contributions from everyone and we did. It was a great way to end the regular season and now we have to go back to work for a play-off run.”

After Geneva′s first-round game against Houghton on Wednesday, the Golden Tornadoes would host a semi-final game with a first round victory. The semi-finals are scheduled for next Saturday night with the AMC Championship game slated for Tuesday, February 27th.
