Ft. Myers, FL – Geneva softball team has opened the season with a 3-3 overall record. It hasn′t gone one day without a victory. On the other hand, it also hasn′t gone one day without a loss. For the third consecutive day, the Golden Tornadoes split a doubleheader to go 3-3 on the season. On Wednesday, Geneva split two games against St. Mary of the Wood College. In game one, Geneva dropped a 10-6 decision, before coming back for a 4-1 victory in the night cap.
In game one, Erinne Metler lost for the first time after winning her first two decisions. Pitching for the third straight day, Metler allowed five earned runs on 10 hits. She struck out five in the game. Offensively, Geneva got seven hits of its own and rallied back from three runs down to tie the game at 5-5 in the fifth inning. Marisa Barickman′s two-run triple in the first inning tied the game at 2-2 and Ashley Archer and Amy Pearce knocked in runs in the fifth to tie the game again. Archer and Barickman had two hits apiece to pace Geneva′s offensive attack.
Game two was dominated on the mound by Ashley Archer. After saving Geneva′s first two victories of the season, Archer picked up a victory of her own after a complete game two-hitter in which she allowed just three base runners and struck out six in the game.
Geneva jumped on top with a run in the first inning on a Mary Gaylor RBI single. With the game tied at 1-1, Amy Pearce came up with a two-run homer, her second of the season, in the fifth inning. Geneva added an unearned run in the sixth inning to extend the lead. Barickman had two more hits in game two, as did Amy Johnson.
Geneva will enjoy a much deserved off day on Thursday before completing its Florida schedule with six more games in the next four days.
