Geneva Shakes Off Rust, Gains Split at Walsh

North Canton, OH - It had been 11 days since Geneva′s baseball team suited up for a game. The Golden Tornadoes had been stuck indoors after countless days of rain kept them off the field. On Saturday, the skies finally cleared and Geneva got back to work with its first AMC North action of the season. After dropping game one 11-3, the Golden Tornadoes battled back for a 5-3 victory in the night cap. The split moved Geneva′s overall record to 9-9, including a 1-1 mark in the AMC North.

Matt Colella took it upon himself to insure Geneva at least one victory on the day. Getting it done at the plate and on the mound, Colella was both the offensive and pitching star in Geneva′s 5-3 victory. On the mound, Colella pitched a seven-inning complete game to earn his second victory of the spring. It was Colella′s offense, however, that gave Geneva the real boost.

Colella launched a three-run homer in the first inning to get Geneva some momentum and a 3-0 early lead. The Golden Tornadoes added two more runs in the fourth to extend the lead to 5-0. Geneva managed to hold on for its first conference victory of the season.

Geneva will welcome the same Walsh team to 33rd Street Field on Monday afternoon in a game that was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday. Because Geneva′s field was not yet ready, Saturday′s game was moved to Canton with the return trip to Beaver Falls coming on Monday.
