Who Knew, A Bear Can Throw a Javelin, Geneva Sophomore Brings Home Gold

California, PA - Geneva′s men′s and women′s track and field team competed in the outside air for the first time in 2007 on Saturday. With several impressive performances, the Golden Tornadoes had a solid day on both the men′s and women′s sides of the field. However, the most impressive performance was turned in by sophomore Tiffany Bear, who took home first place in the women′s javelin event. Bear dominated the field by over six feet with a throw of 133-06. She also placed 11th in the discus throw and 10th in the shotput.

Other top performances included Rebecca VanRegenmorter and Susan Fletcher in both the 800 meter and 1500 meter races. VanRegenmorter finished fourth and fifth respectively, while Fletcher was close behind with sixth place finishes in both events. Brittany Conzo gave a top ten performance in the 100 meter event with a time of 13.19. Geneva′s distance runners dominated the 10000 meter event with Dee Koutsourais brining home the top prize, followed by Beth Bartolomeo in second and Sara Morrison in fourth place. Geneva′s Marsha Miller was the third athlete to win an event as she took home the top spot in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Finally, Jamie Williams was solid in the long jump with a fourth place finish with a distance of 16-04.25.

On the men′s side, Phil Falk came up with a pair of top ten finishes in the 800 and 1500 meter races. Andrew Foxenberg finished second in the 5000 meter event with a time of 15:35.71, just two seconds behind the winner. Ryen Smith was fourth in the 110 meter hurdles, while Luke Duriancik also finished fourth in the 400 meter hurdles. Finally, Akambe Annankra was third in the triple jump, while teammate Brian Dvorsak was seventh in the same event.

Geneva′s track team will travel to Indiana University of Pennsylvania next Saturday for the Western Pennsylvania track championships.
