Pitching Rules the Day, Geneva Trio Leads Geneva Past Thiel
Greenville, PA - Most coaches will tell you that strong pitching equals winning softball. On Thursday, that statement never rang so true as the Golden Tornadoes were led by their trio of pitchers in a doubleheader sweep over Thiel College. Geneva won game one by the score of 3-0 and took the night cap 3-1 in eight innings. The sweep improved Geneva′s overall record to 12-9 as the Golden Tornadoes have now won seven of their last eight games.
Erinne Metler tossed her third straight shut-out in game one. Metler limited Thiel to just three hits in the victory. She struck out three and did not walk a batter. She currently has a streak of 18 consecutive scoreless innings. The offense was mainly provided by Kim Slater. Slater launched a pair of triples in her first two at-bats, which led to the first two runs of the game. Slater scored in the first inning on Michawn Rich′s ground out and then Slater′s second triple knocked in Jackie Anthony. Geneva added an insurance run in the fourth on a Bridget Beachy fielder′s choice. Geneva had six hits in the game.
Game two was again dominated by pitching. Making her first start of the season, Stephanie Wagle went five innings and allowed just one run on two hits while striking out a pair. Geneva opened the scoring with a run in the fourth on an RBI double from Marisa Barickman. After Thiel tied the game at one in the fourth, it remained knotted until the eighth inning. Pinch runner Adrienne Hays scored on a Thiel throwing error to give Geneva the lead and Kim Slater then knocked in an insurance run with a bunt base hit. Ashley Archer pitched the final three innings to pick up her sixth victory of the season. Archer allowed one hit and struck out five in her outing.
Geneva will host Rio Grande University at Koppel Field on Saturday afternoon before heading out on the road for three non-conference doubleheaders next week.
