Marathon Afternoon Ends In Two Game Split

"Geneva Drops Longest Game in School History"

Beaver Falls, PA - Geneva′s 5-3 victory over Rio Grande in the first game of Saturday′s doubleheader proved to be just an appetizer of things to come at Koppel Field. Game two lasted 13 innings, the longest game in Geneva College history, and finished with a 10-5 Rio Grande victory after the Golden Tornadoes committed four errors in the fateful 13th inning. The split moved Geneva′s overall record to 13-10, while Rio Grande is now 11-5 on the young season.

Geneva rallied for dramatic comebacks in both half of Saturday′s doubleheader. In game one, Rio Grande jumped out 3-0 with a run in the first and two more in the third. Geneva got on the board in the bottom of the third on a Kim Slater base hit. Geneva took control of the game with four runs in the fourth inning. Ashley Archer and Marisa Barickman delivered RBI singles as Geneva also took advantage of a crucial error. Erinne Metler picked up her third victory fourth victory of the week with a complete game effort. Metler allowed six hits and struck out three for the win.

Game two started much like game one with Rio Grande taking a lead. Geneva did get the game′s first run on an Amy Pearce RBI single in the first inning. Rio clubbed three solo homers in game two an eventually took a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh. A Michawn Rich two-out base hit capped a four run rally that tied the game at 5-5 at the end of regulation. Despite several scoring opportunities for the Golden Tornadoes, they could not push the winning run across the plate. Rio Grande took advantage of a miscue filled 13th inning to put the game away with five unearned runs. Erinne Metler pitched five more innings in relief and picked up the hard luck loss. Ashley Archer started the game and pitched five innings with five strikeouts. Offensively, Michawn Rich had three hits to go along with two hits a piece for Bridget Beachy, Marisa Barickman and Kelsey Evans.

Geneva will travel to Grove City College to take on former Geneva head coach Chelle Fuss and the Wolverines in a non-conference double dip on Monday.
