torie_clarke.jpg BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Nationally recognized communication specialist Torie Clarke will speak at Geneva College as part of The Colloquia Series on Thursday, March 22 at 7 p.m. in Student Center. She will share her experiences from the White House to the network studio and everywhere in between which led to her new book, Lipstick on a Pig: Winning in the No-Spin Era by Someone Who Knows the Game.

Clarke, a senior advisor to Comcast and a CNN analyst, served as assistant secretary of defense for public affairs under former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. She was at her desk in the Pentagon when the World Trade Center was attacked on September 11, 2001. Minutes after the Pentagon was hit, Ms. Clarke assembled with top aides in the Command Center with Secretary Rumsfeld. From those first moments on 9/11, to embedding correspondents with military units in Operation Iraqi Freedom, a program she led,. Clarke played a leading role in shaping the public′s understanding of the war on terrorism.

Prior to her work in the Pentagon, Clarke served as an assistant U.S. trade representative during the first Bush administration where she worked extensively with journalists from around the world and ran a comprehensive private sector liaison program. She also served as press secretary for President George H.W. Bush′s 1992 reelection campaign.

Widely respected as one of the nation′s most innovative communications strategists, Clarke has advised some of the nation′s  best-known executives. She has been president of Bozell Eskew advertising, head of the Washington office of Hill and Knowlton, and vice president of the National Cable Telecommunications Association, where she helped to develop the first television ratings system. She has also appeared on various television programs including 60 Minutes, Good Morning America and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

In her new book, Lipstick on a Pig: Winning in the No-Spin Era by Someone Who Knows the Game, Clarke offers a complete guide to the policy of transparency, demonstrating that spin is no longer viable in media relations. According to Dave Guthrie, academic dean at Geneva College, “We are pleased to bring Torie Clarke to Geneva to talk as part of The Colloquia Series. This series is designed to expose the campus and surrounding community to some of the compelling and provocative socio-cultural, scientific, religious, literary, educational, political and economic ideas and practices that shape the world today and into the future. We have found that the conversations that are spawned from guests′ presentations offer rich opportunities to consider and to formulate principled Christian responses both intellectually and practically.”  The series is open and free to the campus and the public.

Geneva College, a reformed Christian liberal arts school founded in 1848, prepares students to serve Christ in all areas of society: work, family and the church.  Geneva is a founding member of the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU).
