Rags to Riches, Sophomore Homer Gains Split

Beaver Falls, PA - It took Geneva′s offense 15 innings to send a runner across home plate on Thursday afternoon. After dropping the first game of its doubleheader to St. Vincent by the score of 4-0, the Golden Tornadoes finally pushed three runs across the plate in the bottom of the eighth in the night cap for a 3-0 victory. The split moved Geneva′s overall record to 21-16.

Geneva′s women′s basketball team enjoyed historic success this past season and it was the basketball threesome, that also play softball, which proved to be the offensive difference for Geneva in extra innings. A Jackie Anthony triple, followed by a Bridget Beachy infield single set the stage for the game winning heroics off the bat of Michawn Rich. Rich connected on a three run blast that sent the home fans home happy as Geneva finally was able to solve the St. Vincent pitching.

In game one, Stephanie Wagle made her third start of the season and threw six shut-out innings. Unfortunately, Wagle allowed all four St. Vincent runs in the third inning, which proved to be the difference. Geneva managed just seven singles, including a pair off the bat of Beachy. Wagle allowed nine hits, however five of those hits came in the four-run third inning.

Game two was very similar as neither team could generate much offense. Geneva′s Erinne Metler pitched seven shut-out innings, but did not figure in on the decision. She struck out eight and did not walk a batter. Meanwhile, Geneva managed just four hits prior to the game winning eighth inning in which Rich sent the game winner over the right center field fence.

Ashley Archer came on to pitch a scoreless eighth inning to earn her team leading 11th victory of the season.

Geneva travels to Mt. Vernon Nazarene for the weekend to participate in the NCCAA Eastern Regional with the winner heading to Indiana Wesleyan next weekend for the NCCAA Nationals.
