Riding the Wave of Momentum, Geneva Takes Two from PointPark

Beaver Falls, PA - Two days after capturing the NCCAA East regional title, Geneva′s softball team got back into AMC North play with a critical doubleheader sweep over Point Park University. Moving its winning streak to five games, Geneva defeated Point Park by the scores of 8-1 and 4-1. The sweep moved Geneva′s overall record to 26-17, including a 3-5 mark within the conference. Geneva has one more conference doubleheader on Wednesday against Point Park. The Golden Tornadoes control their own destiny for the chance to open the AMC Play-offs at home next weekend.

Erinne Metler picked up her 13th victory of the season in game one. Metler allowed six hits and just one unearned run. She struck out just one batter, but did not walk anyone. Offensively, Geneva spotted the Pioneers the first run of the game in the fourth inning, but responded with three in the bottom of the inning and four in the fifth. Back to back doubles from Amy Pearce and Mary Gaylor were followed by an RBI triple from Marisa Barickman to get Geneva going on offense. In the fifth, Geneva posted five singles to break the game open. Pearce, Gaylor and Barickman had two hits each to pace the offense.

In game two, Ashley Archer picked up the victory and also allowed just six hits. She struck out six to earn her 12th win of the season. Three of Geneva′s four runs came on solo homers. Amy Pearce connected twice for her sixth and seventh of the season and Michawn Rich launched her second homer of the year. In addition to Pearce′s two hits, Bridget Beachy also had two in a winning cause.

After Geneva faces off with Carlow on Wednesday, the Golden Tornadoes will take to the road on Thursday and Friday for the NCCAA national tournament.
