First-Place Grasp, Sweep Over Malone Solidifies Lead

Canton, OH - Geneva′s baseball team traveled to Thurman Munson Stadium in Ohio on Friday night and it was a trip was well worth it as the Golden Tornadoes pulled off a two-game sweep over Malone College to put a strong hold on first place in the AMC North. Geneva defeated Malone by the scores of 7-3 and 4-1 on a pair of fantastic pitching performances. The two wins moved Geneva to 23-16 overall, including an 8-2 mark in the conference.

Dave Foss came away with the pitching victory in game one and Derek Sumner got the victory in the night cap. Both performances were their best efforts of the season as Geneva took the first two games of its four-game series against Malone College this weekend.

Geneva jumped out in front in both games with a pair of runs in the first inning in both the first and second games. Mike Bruno proved to be the offensive spark as he opened both games with base hits and wound up scoring to take the lead. In game one, Geneva opened a 7-0 lead before Malone made a late charge. Nick Phillips recorded the final two outs to close out the victory.

In the night cap, Geneva again opened the game with two runs in the first inning. Leading 3-1 in the fifth, Matt Colella ripped a double and Rob Arata followed with an RBI triple extend the lead, which was more than enough for starter and winner Derek Sumner.

Geneva will try for a series sweep with a pair of home games against Malone on Saturday. Next week, the Golden Tornadoes will close out the conference schedule with a four-game series against Point Park.
