Title In Sight Following Sweep over PointPark

Washington, PA - Falconi Field was the site of Friday′s AMC North doubleheader between Geneva and Point Park. Leading the AMC North starting the day, Geneva′s baseball team did nothing but improve its position with a pair of victories over the Pioneers. Wins by the scores of 7-2 and 11-4 improved Geneva′s overall record to 26-18, including a 10-4 mark in the conference. The two victories also solidified a hold on first place with just two conference games against Point Park on Saturday. A sweep on Saturday would guarantee Geneva′s first AMC North title.

Geneva went down 2-0 in game one, but rallied to tie the score on an Andy Hiskey two-run single in the fourth inning. In the fifth, Mike Bruno and Matt Colella launched back to back homers to give Geneva a lead it would never relinquish. The Golden Tornadoes tacked on some insurance in the late innings, which was more than enough for Dave Foss, who pitched a complete game and moved his record to 6-2 on the season.

Derek Sumner pitched five innings in game two to pick up his fifth win of the year. But the Geneva offense was the story in the night cap as it clubbed out 11 hits, including three off the bat of Bruno and two each from Colella, Dan DeMarco and Justin Montgomery. Montgomery′s two-run triple in the third got Geneva off and running.

Geneva will host Point Park on Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale with a chance for a conference title. Next week, Geneva will travel to Columbus and Ohio Dominican for the region 9 baseball tournament with the winner heading to the College World Series.
