"We seek to affect kids in three areas: the head, the hands and ultimately the heart. The head is mental, the hands physical and the heart completes the cycle with development of the spiritual."

These powerful words from founder Tyrone Dixon drive home the purpose of the three-day football camp called, "Camp Homeboys." Camp Homeboys brings together over 200 student athletes ages six to 17 from the different communities of Beaver County to help develop their physical and mental talents. Coach Dixon, a Beaver County native, has over 20 years of coaching experience from high school to the NFL, where he was an assistant coach of the San Diego Chargers.

Geneva′s own Head Coach Geno DeMarco had a similar vision of facilitating a local football camp, so three years ago Dixon and DeMarco got together and launched the Homeboys. Tyrone organizes the coaches, keynote speakers and athletes while Geno provides the facilities, food and additional support. For them, it is a great way to give back to the community.

As support has grown, so has the caliber of the speakers. This year′s keynote speaker was the Pittsburgh Steelers General Manager Kevin Colbert. In an emotional speech Colbert stated, "There are three types of kids. Those who say ‘I can′t,′ those who say ‘I′ll try′ and those who say ‘I can.′ You can be that third kid. To be successful you need to be true to that passion." Kevin has been with the Steelers for eight consecutive seasons. He sees great value in speaking to schools, church groups and camps. He feels it "gives kids an opportunity to learn about football and more importantly, life."

This years Homeboys camp ran from Wednesday, July 11 through Friday, July 13. For additional information, please contact Geno DeMarco at 724.847.6650.
