SOFTBALL, TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS
HONORED FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Beaver Falls, PA - It is not uncommon for dozens of Geneva College athletes to be honored each year by numerous organizations for excellence in the classroom. In fact, each of Geneva′s 13 varsity sports had at least one student-athlete honored for his or her outstanding achievements in the classroom during the 2006-07 school year.

In addition to honoring individual work in the classroom, the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) began an initiative this past school year to honor its teams for academic excellence.

Three Geneva teams, softball and men′s and women′s track, were among the first class of NAIA programs to be nationally recognized as scholar-athlete teams. Geneva′s softball team and its men′s track team each finished the season with a team cumulative GPA of 3.19. Meanwhile, the women′s track team topped out at 3.23 for the season.

"Our coaches do a tremendous job, across the board, in helping to maintain excellence in the classroom," said athletic director Geno DeMarco. "This is a tribute to the outstanding student-athletes we have in our programs and the great job our coaches have done in helping our students reach goals on and off the field."

Just over 400 athletic teams were recognized by the NAIA for academic excellence in the first year of the scholar-athlete team program.

Geneva′s athletic teams are making the transition into NCAA Division III and the Presidents′ Athletic Conference with the beginning of the 2007-08 school year.
