BEAVER FALLS, Pa. - For the first time in its almost 160-year history, Geneva College has imposed a waiting list for incoming students.
The reason for this measure is that the college has reached its self-imposed cap of 425 new students for the fall 2007 semester. The cap is based on both housing and class availability. Reaching this milestone means an increase of more than 15 percent in new-student enrollment at Geneva over last year.
"We face declining demographics in this region and deal with a very competitive higher education market," says Geneva College President Ken Smith. "Our increase in the number of new students is extremely encouraging. To us, this high level of student interest in Geneva is an affirmation of the value of a high-quality education taught from a Christian perspective."
Vice President of Marketing Edgardo Vencio, who has been at Geneva for less than two years, notes that there has been an increased effort to communicate what Geneva offers to audiences in and beyond western Pennsylvania. New students are coming to Geneva from as far as Florida and Texas in the United States and from some countries beyond the U.S. borders.
Geneva College is noted for providing individual attention in a family-like environment. The average class size (not including independent studies) is 17.0, and the student/faculty ratio is 14:1. Geneva has higher-than-average graduation rates (57.2 percent over five years, compared to the national 38 percent). Placement, too, is extremely high, with 94 percent of Geneva graduates either working or in grad school within six months and 55 percent of seniors typically having jobs or admission to grad school prior to graduation.
