GenevaClaims Career Victory #500

Beaver Falls, PA - On a perfect day for football in Beaver Falls, Geneva′s football program relived some old time memories on homecoming and the Golden Tornadoes reached an historic milestone by way of a 29-7 victory over Division I-AA LaSalle University. Geneva′s victory moved its overall record to 4-1 and even more impressive was the fact that the Golden Tornadoes claimed their program′s 500th victory in its 118-year history.

Dating back to its first year of football in 1890, Geneva became the 25th Division III program in the country to join the 500 club. Playing in its first year as a member of Division III and the Presidents′ Athletic Conference, Geneva won a total of 496 games as a charter member of the NAIA.

On Saturday, it was the defense of Geneva that stole the show and made the difference for a Geneva team that has won four of its first five games in 2007. Geneva held LaSalle to just 177 total yards, including just 38 yards on the ground. Not only did Geneva keep LaSalle from gaining yardage, it also provided 14 points of its own. After Nick DePietro opened the scoring with a 28 yard field goal, it was the defense that took over prior to halftime.

With just under five minutes remaining Jamaur Law picked up a fumble and scampered 30 yards for a touchdown. With less than a minute remaining before the half, Brian Wilson scooped up another fumble and raced down the sidelines 63 yards to extend the lead to 17-0 at the half.

Geneva′s offense finally found the end zone on a pair of second half drives that were capped by a 4 yard reception from Adam Chatlos from Bobby Bondi and a 2 yard run from Matt Dean. LaSalle′s John McVey caught a seven-yard touchdown to avoid the shutout for LaSalle in the final four minutes of the fourth quarter.

The defense was led by Greg Eberhart with eight tackles, including two tackles for loss. Geneva had six sacks in the ball game and Brian Wilson accounted for two of those sacks to go along with his 63 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Geneva will finish its three game home stand next Saturday night when it hosts Salisbury University at Reeves Field beginning at 6 pm.
