GENEVAGETS DEFENSIVE AGAINST DAEMEN, RECORDS
FIFTH SHUT-OUT
Beaver Falls, PA - Offense is fun to watch for fans and scoring goals is an exciting part of winning soccer teams. For Geneva′s men′s soccer team, it has been the defense that has taken center stage in 2007 and has led to an incredible turnaround from only one year ago. On Wednesday afternoon, Sam McCracken and the Golden Tornadoes defensive unit recorded their fifth shut-out of the season in a 2-0 whitewash over former AMC foe Daemen College. For Geneva, it was the ninth victory in ten games and helped improve its overall record to 9-2, which is already triple the number of victories recorded throughout the entire 2006 season.
Geneva′s offense got a fortunate bounce in the 11th minute to open the scoring. Scott Swartley got credit for his eighth goal of the season when a ball bounced off of a Daemen defender to draw first blood.
The score remained 1-0 until Jonah Creasy intercepted an outlet pass and found the back of the net in the 69th minute to give Geneva some breathing room against the Wildcats. For the second straight game and only the second time all year Geneva got out shot by an opponent. Daemen finished the match with a 10-8 advantage in the shot column, but McCracken was up to the task with four saves to register the shut-out and lower his goals against average to 0.51 for the season. He has allowed only five goals all season in almost 900 minutes of action.
Geneva will take to the road on Saturday to face another former AMC opponent in Malone College. After traveling to Saint Vincent next week, the Golden Tornadoes will return to Merriman Athletic Complex one week from Friday to host Waynesburg College. With the victory, Geneva improved to a perfect 6-0 on home turf.
