On Friday, Oct. 19, Geneva College′s chemistry department will kick off National Chemistry Week with a learning opportunity for high school students.

As part of the college′s Math, Science and Engineering Visit Day, interested college-bound students will take part in a hands-on activity involving types of drug testing (presumptive and confirmatory).

Students will learn some basic principles of organic molecule naming and structure, and work with the Chemistry Department faculty and current Geneva students to carry out various chemistry-related tests and studies.

The Visit Day will provide an introduction to techniques and methods of thinking that are important in college math, science and engineering courses. Faculty and students will be available to discuss the various fields as college majors and careers. Students may also tour the college′s laboratories and classrooms. Invited majors include math (with concentrations in applied math and math education), chemistry (biochemistry and chemistry education), computer science (web technology, information systems, hardware, science/math programming), engineering (chemical, civil, computer, electrical, interdisciplinary and mechanical) and physics (physics education).

Students interested in participating with the college′s Math, Science and Engineering Visit Day can register online, or call 724-847-6500 or toll free 800-847-8255.

Held Oct. 21 – 27, National Chemistry Week celebrates its 20th anniversary this year with the theme “the Many Faces of Chemistry.” Sponsored by the American Chemistry Society, National Chemistry Week is a community-based outreach program that aims to raise awareness of chemistry and its positive effects. This years′ theme focuses on diverse people that have been involved with the program and with chemistry in general.
