OUTPLAYING THIEL FOR TWO MATCHES, GENEVA

WINS ONE, LOSES ONE

Beaver Falls, PA - When you look at the statistics from Geneva′s two soccer matches on Saturday night, it is hard to believe the Golden Tornadoes only managed to win one. Geneva′s women out shot Thiel 22-1 and the Golden Tornadoes′ men held a 24-4 advantage in shots, but it was only the men′s team that came away victorious.

Thiel′s women made its only shot of the night count as it snuck out of town with a 1-0 victory over Geneva. In the night cap, the men from Geneva cruised to a 3-0 decision over the Tomcats. The women′s team fell to 2-12-1, while the men improved to 11-5 in 2007.

It was perhaps the most dominating performance of the season for Geneva′s women. Despite the heavy advantage in shots, it was one breakaway goal mid-way through the first half that proved to be the difference. Thiel′s women came into play having just one victory and having been shut-out ten times already this year. Geneva had numerous opportunities around the net in the second half, but could not come away with the equalizer and moved its winless streak to 11 straight games.

In the second match of the night, the game remained scoreless for most of the first half until Dexter Edwards took a feed from Johnathan Hunt in the final minute of the first half and found the back of the net to give Geneva a 1-0 lead.

The Golden Tornadoes managed to increase their lead on second half goals from Russ Picard and Kenton Burkhart. Sam McCracken made three saves to register his seventh shut-out of the season as Geneva remained perfect at home with its eighth consecutive victory at the Merriman Athletic Complex.

Both the men and women will close out the regular season next week with home doubleheaders on Wednesday against Grove City and Friday against Bethany.
