OVERTIME THRILLER, GENEVAUPENDS

WAYNESBURG IN DRAMATIC FASHION

Beaver Falls, PA- It was only the second overtime game to ever be played at Reeves Field and it took almost four hours to come away with a result, but it ended up being the result the Geneva was looking for as the Golden Tornadoes came away with a 24-17 overtime victory over Waynesburg University. The win moved Geneva′s overall record to 7-2 and kept its NCCAA Victory Bowl hopes alive, while Waynesburg lost for the second time in as many weeks and fell to 7-2.

After a scoreless first quarter dominated by both defensives, Geneva put up 17 unanswered points in the second quarter. Bobby Bondi found Scott Koenig for a 16-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter to cap an 8 play, 54 yard drive. After the first of five Waynesburg turnovers, Nick DiPietro nailed a 28-yard field goal to extend the lead to 10-0. With less than a minute before halftime, Geneva struck again on a 5-yard touchdown from Bondi to Brian Dvorsak, which put Geneva up 17-0 and seemingly well in control of the game at the half.

Waynesburg turned the tables on Geneva with 17 points of its own in the third quarter. Touchdown runs from Robert Heller and Aaron Davis, followed by a 35-yard field goal from Kyle McBride tied the score with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter. Neither team could find points in the fourth quarter and the game went into an extra session.

Bobby Bondi took off on a 20-yard run on the first play from scrimmage in the overtime. On the next play, Gabe Gordon scored on an end-around for his first collegiate touchdown. On Waynesburg only possession of overtime, it converted a fourth and five to move the chains, but the drive stalled inside the ten yard line and when Andy Lauterbach′s fourth down pass fell incomplete, Geneva came away with a well-deserved seven point victory.

Bondi completed just eight passes for 87 yards, but two of those passes ended up in the end zone. On the ground, Matt Dean led the charge with 73 yards on 22 carries. For Waynesburg, Robert Heller, who entered the game averaging 199 yards per game, was held to 113 yards on 36 carries and averaged just over three yards per touch.

Geneva′s defense forced five turnovers, including an interception and fumble recovery from Zach Feltrop. Feltrop led Geneva with 12 tackles, while Dan Terracciano came up with 11 tackles in the victory.

Geneva will await word from the NCCAA on Thursday to find out if it has done enough for its fifth Victory Bowl bid in school history. Next Saturday, the Golden Tornadoes close out the regular season at home against Grove City College at 1:30 pm. Prior to that kickoff, Geneva will honor its 20 seniors on senior day at Reeves Field. If Geneva does not get an NCCAA bid, it will also seek an ECAC invitation, which won′t be announced until November 12th.
