DEFENSIVE LOCKDOWN, GENEVACRUISES PAST LAROCHE

Beaver Falls, PA - It was Geneva′s top ranked defense that helped the Golden Tornadoes women advance to their first ever NAIA national tournament last season. Early in the new campaign, not much has changed. On Saturday afternoon, Geneva′s defense rose up again in an impressive 67-43 victory over previously unbeaten LaRoche College. Geneva moved to 2-0 with the victory and will start a very difficult stretch of games next week.

Geneva opened up a 31-20 lead heading into the locker room and quickly extended that lead to a 22 point advantage with the first 11 points of the second half. LaRoche snuck back into the game and cut the lead to eleven points with a 14-2 run of its own that made the score 44-33 with 13:05 to play. The Redhawks could never get the deficit into single digits and Geneva pulled away in the final minutes.

Holding LaRoche to just 28% shooting from the field, Geneva shot 47% for the game, including 5-9 (56%) from outside the three-point arc. "We shot the ball extremely well early," said head coach Ron Galbreath. "We always rely heavily on our defense and the girls really got after it this afternoon."

Renee Rawding led the offensive charge for the second straight game with 22 points. Allyson Clarke scored 15 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Lauren Uranker also reached double figures with 12 points, including a pair of treys. Ashley Heakins was the only LaRoche player to reach double figures with 11 points.

Geneva will play three straight nights beginning with a road game at Fredonia on Monday. The Golden Tornadoes will return to Metheny Fieldhouse to host Carlow and Franciscan on Tuesday and Wednesday night.
