It was a day for chemistry. On Saturday, Oct. 27, Geneva College′s Chemistry Club joined other chemists and chemical engineers at the Carnegie Science Center as part of National Chemistry Week.

The Science Center marked the week by offering demonstrations and presentations to middle- and high-school students.  “This was a community service event to help teach kids about science,” said Dr. Kerry McMahon, faculty advisor for the Chemistry Club. “It also was an opportunity to hopefully interest some kids in pursuing science as a career.”

Geneva′s Chemistry Club set up a booth at the Science Center where visitors could perform a “Chemistry of Photography” experiment. Students Robyn Weber, Kate Wallace, Jeremy Hustead, Greg Holland, Amanda Lydic and Janice Lebga used this opportunity to share their passion for chemistry with students in the Pittsburgh area.

“The chemistry club members who participated really seemed to get excited about the possibility that we could get children as enthused about chemistry as we are,” Weber says. “Science can be seen as ‘uncool′ to today′s youth so everyone enjoyed watching the kids get really involved with the scientific experiments.”
