STILL PERFECT, GENEVARUNS RECORD
TO 7-0 WITH WIN OVER W & J
Beaver Falls, PA - It turned out to be Geneva′s sternest test of the season, but the Golden Tornadoes′ women prevailed in the end with a 48-46 victory over Washington & Jefferson that improved their record to 7-0 to start the new campaign.
Geneva started sluggish in the first half and trailed 17-10 midway through the first frame. The Golden Tornadoes rallied after a Ron Galbreath timeout to score the next 12 points and turn the game into a 22-17 Geneva lead. At halftime, the Golden Tornadoes held a tenuous 24-23 lead.
Leading for most of the second half, Geneva watched the President′s take back the lead and push the advantage to four points at 42-38 with just six minutes remaining in the game. Sparked by the offensive rebounding of Michawn Rich and Allyson Clarke, along with the scoring of Renee Rawding, Geneva rallied back.
With the score tied at 46-46, Lauren Uranker was the hero as she scored on a five-foot bank shot with just nine seconds remaining in regulation. W & J had a chance with the final possession, but Michawn Rich stole a pass and preserved the seventh straight victory for the Golden Tornadoes.
Renee Rawding led Geneva with 18 points, including 5-13 shooting from the field. Allyson Clarke added 15 points, while Rich scored nine and added a team best nine rebounds. Uranker was 0-5 from three-point range, but made the big shot when it counted the most.
W & J was led by Emily Hays′ 15 points in the loss as the President′s fell to 5-2 on the season.
Geneva will travel to Bethany College on Saturday as it takes its first PAC road challenge. The Golden Tornadoes return to Metheny Fieldhouse a week from Saturday when they host Penn State Beaver.
