CLARKE THE SPARK IN GENEVAOVERTIME
WIN, G-T′s MOVE TO 8-0
Bethany, WV - Geneva′s women moved to a school record 8-0 to start the campaign, but on Saturday it took a bit longer than the previous seven. Geneva needed overtime to win its eighth straight as the Golden Tornadoes defeated Bethany 79-68 on the strength of a 15-4 surge in the extra session. While Geneva improved to 8-0, Bethany fell to 4-5 on the season.
Geneva got many strong contributions across the board, but it was senior Allyson Clarke who rescued her Geneva teammates in time of need. Clarke poured in 25 points and pulled down a career best 18 rebounds in the victory, but it was one particular three-point play that proved to be the spark Geneva needed in the second half.
Geneva led Bethany 34-28 at the half, but the Golden Tornadoes quickly let he Bison back in the game as Bethany took a 39-38 lead just four minutes in the second half. After both teams took turns with the lead for the next several minutes, Bethany began to pull away and looked like it had Geneva on the ropes when it stretched the lead to 55-48 with 9:16 left in the second half. On the next possession, Clarke pulled down an offensive rebound and converted a three point play, which was followed by another Clarke field goal that quickly brought Geneva back to within just two points. Lauren Uranker, who′s jump shot on Wednesday gave Geneva a victory over W & J, pulled another two points out of her bag of tricks to give Geneva a 64-62 lead with just under three minutes to play.
Tara Harris tied the game for Bethany with 27 seconds left in regulation and neither team could score the rest of the way to send the game into overtime.
Michawn Rich scored back to back field goals to give Geneva a four point lead and the Golden Tornadoes never looked back. Geneva out scored Bethany 15-4 in overtime and cruised to the victory down the stretch.
In addition to Clarke′s heroics, Renee Rawding posted 21 points, 18 of which came in the second half and in overtime. Lauren Uranker finished with 16 points and Michawn Rich had her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Kelly Goode led Bethany in a losing cause with 18 points, while Tara Harris finished with 14 points.
Geneva will host Penn State Beaver next Saturday in an attempt to start the season 9-0. A victory next Saturday would also give head coach Ron Galbreath 100 in his six year career at Geneva.
