Dr_Behe.jpgBeaver Falls, Pa. – 148 years after he published Origin of Species, Darwin may have met his intellectual match in Dr. Michael J. Behe.  Although once a staunch supporter and advocate of the theory of evolution, Behe has now diverted his energies to exploring and presenting the theory of intelligent design. Undoubtedly controversial, Dr. Behe brings his nationally recognized expertise to the 2007 – 2008 Colloquia Series at Geneva College, scheduled on Thursday, Feb. 7 and Friday, Feb. 8 in Skye Lounge. Behe was originally supposed to lecture this past September, but rescheduled due to illness.

The Colloquia Series has been designed as a forum where the Geneva College community may engage in academic discussion and debate. Fostering compelling and provocative discussion on socio-cultural, scientific, religious, literary, political, economic and educational issues, the series attempts to drive at the heart of many of the ideas and practices that shape our lives and the world in which we live.

Behe's credentials as a published biochemist gave the intelligent design movement its first major mainstream proponent.  Describing the evolutionary process at the biological level as “irreducibly complex”, Dr. Behe has authored two books and more than 40 technical papers refuting Darwin′s claims. His books include, Darwin′s Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution (Free Press 1996) and The Edge of Evolution: The Search for the Limits of Darwinism (Free Press 2007).

Behe holds a degree in chemistry from Drexel University in Philadelphia and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Pennsylvania. Behe, a professor of biochemistry at Lehigh University resides in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania with his wife and nine children.

His first lecture, The Argument for Intelligent Design in Biology will be held on Thursday, Feb. 7 at 7:00 p.m., in Skye Lounge. The second of the series, How Deeply into Life Does Purposeful Design Extend? – A Scientific Estimate will be held at 10:10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 8. There is no fee for admission.
