24 YEARS IN THE WAITING, GENEVA′S WOMEN DEFEAT
SAINT VINCENT IN LATROBE FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 1984
Latrobe, PA - The last time Geneva′s women′s basketball team won a game at Saint Vincent College was in the American Mideast Conference play-offs back in 1999. However, it was not the Bearcats that Geneva defeated. The Golden Tornadoes beat Seton Hill University in the first round of the play-offs that season, but were then eliminated by Saint Vincent three days later. Not since the 1984-85 season has a Geneva women′s team defeated Saint Vincent in Latrobe. That is, of course, until Geneva′s 51-47 victory on Wednesday night.
With the victory, Geneva improved to 17-3 on the season, while Saint Vincent fell to 7-13 and had its three-game winning streak snapped in the process.
Early in the game it appeared Geneva was going to run the Bearcats out of the building as the Golden Tornadoes scored the game′s first 13 points. Saint Vincent scored ten of the next 12 points to get back into the game mid-way through the first half. Geneva found itself trailing by the score of 28-25 as the two teams headed to the locker room. The Golden Tornadoes responded with an impressive defensive display in the second half that sparked their comeback. Geneva allowed just 19 second half points and held Saint Vincent to just five field goals in the final 20 minutes. The Golden Tornadoes were not exactly setting the nets on fire with just seven second half field goals and a 31% shooting mark for the game.
In recent weeks, Allyson Clarke has provided dominant performances across the Presidents′ Athletic Conference. This night proved to be no different as the senior forward scored 22 points and pulled down 17 rebounds for her 16th double-double of the season. Clarke was the only Geneva player to score in double figures. Renee Rawding scored eight points, while Christine Carugati played an important role with seven points, including a pair of three-point field goals.
Saint Vincent was led by Maria Baroffio′s 13 points off the bench. A total of eight players scored for the Bearcats, but it wasn′t enough to extend their winning streak to four games.
Geneva travels to Pittsburgh on Saturday to play Chatham College at 2 pm. Next week, Geneva hosts Waynesburg on Saturday and undefeated Thomas More on Feburary 16th.
