The discussion about justice at Geneva might not be a loud one, but its ongoing presence can be felt in a number of corners, classrooms, and offices across campus. These conversations – led by a variety of groups and clubs – are being put into the light via Justice Week, taking place Feb. 4 – 8.
Justice Week is being spearheaded by a large assembly of individual groups. Acting on AIDS, International Justice Mission, Kairette, BSO, Upper Room and Student Activities are all binding together to produce an event that should stimulate a larger dialogue across Geneva. Both AOA and IJM had individual events last semester, which produced excellent discourses but suffered from poor attendance. Justice Week′s calendar of events hopes to change that.
The week kicked off on Monday, Feb. 4. Prayer booths are set up in Skye Lounge through Thursday, each highlighting specific injustices on local and global fronts. Students and faculty are encouraged to visit these booths and think about the issues presented.
The beginning of the week kicked off the Rice for Life event. On Monday, students were able to volunteer to only eat rice for dinner for five days. Meal plan swipes on Thursday night will be donated to the Micah Challenge, a program dedicate to ending poverty.
An African American Read-in Chain will take place in Skye Lounge at 8 p.m. Wednesday. The event, which will blend music, spoken word and poetry, is intended to help shed light on the injustices faced by those who addressed injustice throughout history.
Thursday night′s event will take place at Upper Room, in Johnson Gym, at 9:30 p.m. Jason Fileta, of the Micah Challenge, will talk about his efforts in the movement to end poverty. He will also be speaking in Dr. Brad Frey′s Social Justice class on Thursday afternoon.
The week will wrap up on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with a house party at City House, located at 819 Lincoln Place in Beaver Falls. City House, which is committed to communal living with each other and the Beaver Falls neighborhood, will host live music and coffee catered by the Beaver Falls Coffee and Tea Company. All are encouraged to come at and wrap up Justice Week with friends, fellowship and discussion.
