CACREP - The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs

Beaver Falls, Pa. – Geneva College is pleased to announce that three master′s programs which prepare students to become professional counselors have been accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). This accreditation, given only when the program meets rigorous standards, sets Geneva′s three graduate counseling programs apart from others.

The three master′s degrees that received accreditation are: Marriage and Family Counseling; Mental Health Counseling; and School Counseling.

“We're very pleased about this,” says program director Dr. Carol Luce. “The accreditation will help our graduates as they seek jobs and licensure in Pennsylvania and other states.  Students who graduate from CACREP accredited programs are eligible for National Counselor Certification at the time of graduation.  Students from non-accredited programs must complete at least two additional years of supervised experience before they are eligible for national counselor certification.”  Accreditation — the voluntary, non-governmental review of educational programs — provides recognition that the content and quality of an accredited program have been evaluated extensively and meets standards set for and by the profession.

Luce is happy with the accreditation. “Many of our students have sought us out because we're a Christian school, and not many evangelical Christian colleges have achieved this recognition.”

“Students preparing to become Marriage and Family Counselors, Mental Health Counselors and School Counselors can complete the entire graduate program in two years. Our school counseling program graduates are certified in both elementary and secondary school counseling,” says Luce. “Accreditation opens up increased opportunities for our students.”
