BEAVER FALLS, Pa. - Geneva alumnus Dr. John Snarey was recently awarded fellow status with the American Psychological Association (APA) in the division of Developmental Psychology. Snarey grew up the son of a steelworker and grandson of a coalminer in New Brighton, PA. He believes he has been "unusually blessed in terms of opportunities that have come my way."

The APA stipulates that in order to be awarded fellow status, the candidate must have performed work that has national impact and outstanding contribution to the field of psychology.

Snarey is a developmental and cultural psychologist and educator whose areas of interest include adolescent and adult development, personality and social-moral development, and the psychology of religious experiences. He also serves as an associate professor in the department of Psychology and Educational Studies of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He has worked as a professor of human development and ethics at Candler School of Theology at Emory University for 20 years. He has authored, co-authored, or co-edited six books and over 60 articles.

Snarey graduated from Geneva in 1969 with a degree in elementary education. He went on to Wheaton College and Harvard University to obtain his master′s and doctoral degrees. He now specializes in moral cognition, development, and education. His current work focuses on cross-cultural research on the moral development of Liberian women.

Snarey received the distinction as fellow in the APA in the division of Developmental Psychology. A fellow position with the APA funds and encourages research in specific fields of psychology.
