Florida Swing Ends With Wins in Three of Last Four

Kissimmee, FL - After starting the week by losing five of its first six games, Geneva′s softball team ended its Florida trip by winning three of the last four. On Saturday, the Golden Tornadoes split a pair of five-inning mercy rule games. In game one, Geneva defeated the United States Merchant Marine Academy by the score of 9-1. In the night cap, Geneva had the tables turned in a 12-1 loss to Simpson College. The split moved Geneva′s record to 4-6 at the end of its Florida road trip.

In an uncharacteristically cool day in Florida, Geneva′s bats provided the heat in the first game. The Golden Tornadoes spotted U.S.M.M.A. a run in the top of the first, but put up a six spot in the bottom of the inning. Amy Pearce, Kim Slater and Lyndsay Piette had three consecutive run scoring singles. The inning was capped by a two-run homer from Adriane Blake, the first of her collegiate career. Amy Pearce launched her second home in as many days to put the game away in the fourth inning. Pearce and Rich had two hits in the victory. On the mound, Rebekah Wahl got her second victory in as many days. Wahl allowed just three hits and struck out five in five innings of work.

Geneva′s attempt at its second consecutive two-game sweep was put to rest early in the night cap. Simpson College exploded for six first-inning runs to put the game away. Ashley Archer allowed just four earned runs in picking up the loss. Michawn Rich had two more hits in the night cap, but Geneva managed just five hits in the game.

The Golden Tornadoes will return to Beaver Falls on Monday to prepare for the northern portion of its schedule. Geneva is scheduled for a four-game road trip to Shawnee State and Thomas More next weekend. The Golden Tornadoes open their home schedule on their new field on Geneva′s campus on March 29th when they host Grove City College in a Presidents′ Athletic Conference doubleheader.
