SWEET SWEEP, GENEVAOPENS PAC PLAY WITH TWO

WINS OVER BETHANY

Bethany, WV - A new era of Geneva baseball officially opened on Wednesday as the Golden Tornadoes played their first game against the President′s Athletic Conference. Geneva′s historic day ended on a positive note as it took a pair of games from the Bison by the scores of 7-3 and 4-2. The sweep helped Geneva to improve its record to 9-4 on the season.

In game one, Geneva used a solid pitching performance from starter Dave Foss, as well as a three-hit effort from Andy Lubich for the victory. Foss threw 6 1/3 innings and allowed three runs in picking up his third victory of the season. Freshman Matt Baer entered the game in the seventh with Geneva clinging to a one-run lead and he threw the final 2 1/3 innings to pick up his first collegiate save. Geneva had a total of seven hits in game one and also used a Phil Shallenberger RBI for late game insurance.

Game two saw another solid pitching performance as Derek Sumner won for the third time with a seven-hit, complete game victory. Sumner struck out ten batters for the third time this season and now has 42 K′s in just over 22 innings of work. Tadd Eyster continued his hot hitting with a pair of hits and two runs scored in the night cap. Eyster reached base six times in the doubleheader. Jon Jurinko also had two hits, while Joel Gatti chipped in with a double and the go-ahead base hit in the eighth inning. With the scored tied at two, Gatti got a clutch base hit to give Geneva the final lead of the day.

The Golden Tornadoes will look to enact some revenge against Penn State Beaver on Saturday as they make the short trip on Saturday for a noon doubleheader. Penn State rallied from six runs down on Monday to steal a 10-9 victory from the Golden Tornadoes, which ended their seven game winning streak.
