WEATHER STAYS COLD, BATS STAY HOT AS GT′S
SWEEP PENN STATE BEAVER
Monaca, PA - The cold temperatures of Western Pennsylvania don't seem to be affecting the hot bats of Geneva′s softball team. Two days after posting 33 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Allegheny, the Golden Tornadoes tallied 23 runs in a pair of victories over Penn State Beaver. Geneva defeated the Lions by the scores of 7-3 and 16-11 to move its overall record to 8-6, including victories in seven of its last eight games.
Penn State opened the scoring in game one with a pair of runs in the first inning. However, Ashley Archer settled in nicely and allowed just three hits and one unearned run the rest of the game for her fourth victory of the season. Archer struck out eight in the win. Geneva′s offensive show was led by Michawn Rich′s two hits and three RBI′s. Rich launched her first home run of the season with a solo shot in the fourth inning. Geneva had a total of seven hits in the first game, including two each from Rich and Samantha Bautista.
Game two turned into an even bigger slugfest as the two teams combined for 27 runs. Archer entered the game in the third inning and struck out four allowing just one unearned run for her second victory of the day. The offense for Geneva again came up big with nine runs in the top of the first highlighted by Adriane Blake′s second homer of the season and first career grand slam. Blake finished the game with four hits, while Amy Pearce collected three hits in the night cap. Michawn Rich added two more hits, including her second homer of the day. In all, Geneva banged out 17 hits in game two, including a pair from Jackie Anthony.
Geneva will open PAC play on Saturday afternoon at Grove City College. The Golden Tornadoes are scheduled to play four more road doubleheaders next week before returning to Beaver Falls for the home opener on their new field on April 7th against Chatham College.
