New Era of Softball Opens As Geneva Splits a Pair in PAC Opener

Bethany, WV - Geneva′s softball team opened a new era on Tuesday with its first action as a member of the Presidents′ Athletic Conference. The Golden Tornadoes had their bats cooled in a 1-0 loss in game one, but responded with an 8-0 victory in five innings in the night cap. Geneva′s overall record moved to 9-7, while Bethany finished the day at 7-9.

Freshman starter Rebekah Wahl was the hard luck loser in game one. After two outs in the first inning. Wahl walked a pair of batters and one those walks came around to score what proved to be the only run of the game. Wahl fell to 2-2 on the season with a complete game loss in which she allowed five hits and struck out one. Geneva′s offense, which put up 56 runs in the last two doubleheaders, managed just four hits and could never generate a serious threat.

The Golden Tornadoes did put together a threat in the first inning of game two, which resulted in an eight-run inning. Amy Pearce and Lyndsay Piette each had RBI singles and Samantha Bautista had a two-run triple. The inning was capped with a two-run single off the bat of starting pitcher Ashley Archer. Geneva had eight hits for the game, including two each from Amy Pearce and Samantha Bautista. Archer pitched a five-inning, complete game shut-out for her 6th win of the season. She allowed six hits and struck out five in the victory.

Geneva′s softball team hit the highway to Kentucky following the doubleheader as they will battle Thomas More in another PAC doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Tornadoes are set to open their home schedule on Monday against Chatham College.
