W & J COOLS GENEVAWITH DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP
Beaver Falls, PA - Geneva′s baseball team entered Saturday′s action as one of the hottest teams in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference with victories in four straight games. On Saturday, Washington & Jefferson cooled off the Golden Tornadoes with a pair of victories by the scores of 4-2 and 12-5. The two losses dropped Geneva′s overall record to 11-6, while W & improved to 12-6.
It took extra innings to decide the first game as both teams managed a pair of runs through nine innings. The President′s were able to chase two more runs across the plate for the decisive two-run decision. Adam Foss pitched a strong nine innings giving up just one earned run on six hits and striking out eight. Justin Montgomery was saddled with the loss by allowing two runs, only one of which was earned, in the top of the 11th inning.
Geneva′s offense provided just five hits in 11 innings, including an RBI single from Andy Hiskey in the second inning and the first career home run off the bat of Phil Shallenberger in the sixth inning to tie the score at two each.
Game two featured another close game for the majority of the afternoon before W & J put some insurance runs on the board late. Derek Sumner pitched 7 1/3 innings and was handed the loss after allowing seven earned runs on 14 hits. W & J posted five runs in the eighth inning to extend its two-run lead at the time. Geneva opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the second inning on an RBI single from Joel Gatti and a sacrifice fly from Tyler Kepiro. After W & J posted four runs in the top of the third, the Golden Tornadoes came back to tie the game with a pair in the bottom half of the inning. Joe Jurinko′s RBI double and Gatti′s second RBI base hit tied the score. Each team scored a run in the fourth before the President′s took the lead for good with a two-spot in the fifth inning.
Jon Jurinko had three hits in the night cap, including a pair of doubles and a triple. Gatti also had three hits in game two, while Shallenberger picked up a pair of knocks.
Geneva will travel to Thomas More on Wednesday before returning home next Saturday to host Westminster.
