CAGED TOMCATS, GENEVAUNLOADS DOUBLEHEADER
SWEEP OVER THIEL
Greenville, PA - Geneva′s softball team has been for a break-out day and on Saturday afternoon the Golden Tornadoes got exactly what they were looking for at Thiel College. Geneva swept a doubleheader from Thiel by the scores of 11-0 and 8-0 with both games being shortened to six innings because of the mercy rule. The sweep helped Geneva improve its overall record to 11-9.
Geneva′s success started with a pair of impressive pitching performances. Ashley Archer threw five innings of one hit ball in game one, before allowing Rebekah Wahl to close out the game in the sixth. Archer allowed just one base runner in five innings, while striking out six batters. Wahl pitched a hitless sixth inning in game one. Archer started game two and lasted just one inning after suffering a finger injury running the bases in the bottom of the first. Wahl pitched the final five shut out innings to earn her third victory of the season. Wahl gave up just two hits and struck out four in the win.
Geneva′s offense showed up in a big way after being shut down for most of the week. In game one, the Golden Tornadoes pounded out 13 hits, including three hits off the bat of Amy Pearce. Pearce collected a double, triple and home run in her first three at-bats of the game and came close to picking up a cycle in her final at-bat. Ashley Archer, Michawn Rich and Samantha Baustista had two hits each. Bautista had a pair of RBI singles in three at-bats. Geneva put together back to back four run innings in the fifth and sixth innings to put the game away.
In game two, Geneva opened the scoring in the second on an RBI triple from Kara Zimmerman. Michawn Rich′s RBI ground out in the third inning extended the lead. Geneva took a 2-0 lead to the sixth when it exploded for six runs capped by the second grand slam of the season off the bat of Adriane Blake. Blake, Zimmerman, Lindsay Piette and Jackie Anthony each had two hits in the night cap.
After playing its first 20 games away from home waiting for its new field to be completed, Geneva will finally get the chance to play a home game on Monday. The Golden Tornadoes will play their first game on Geneva′s campus in ten years when they host Chatham College on Monday at 3 pm. Geneva will also host Westminster in another PAC doubleheader on Tuesday.
