WALK OFF WINNERS, HISKEY SECURES SWEEP

WITH NINTH INNING GAME WINNER

Beaver Falls, PA - Geneva′s baseball team needed a lift after dropping its last four games heading into Saturday′s doubleheader against Westminster. The offense provided that lift and Andy Hiskey′s ninth inning single in the ninth inning sent Geneva home with a doubleheaders sweep. Geneva won game one 11-7 and followed that up with a dramatic 4-3 victory in the night cap. The Golden Tornadoes improved to 13-8 with the sweep.

In game one, Geneva opened up an 8-0 lead after seven innings only to have to hold out for the victory late in the game. Tadd Eyster had three hits and scored three runs in the first four innings to spark the offensive attack. Geneva had 11 hits in the first four frames to open a sizable lead. The Titans stormed back with a run in the fifth and a six run rally in the seventh which pulled them to within a couple runs. An RBI double from Derek Sumner followed by a run scoring single from Joel Gatti in the seventh inning gave the Golden Tornadoes much needed breathing room. Dave Foss pitched 6 2/3 innings to pick up his fourth victory of the season. Matt Baer closed out the final 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to gain his second save of the season. In addition to Eyster′s offensive prowess, Joe Jurinko had three hits, while teammates Justin Acosta, Phil Shallenberger, Derek Sumner and Andy Hiskey each had two hits in game one.

Geneva jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two. Back to back RBI doubles from Joel Gatti and Andy Hiskey got the Golden Tornadoes off and running. Gatti extended the lead with a bases loaded hit batsman in the second inning. Like game one, Westminster rallied with single runs in the fourth, seventh and ninth to tie the game. With the scored tied at three in the bottom of the ninth, Andy Hiskey′s two-out base hit scored Tyler Kepiro with the game winning run. Derek Sumner went the distance for the victory. He allowed eight hits and struck out seven for the victory.

Geneva will travel to Walsh on Tuesday for a non-conference single game before getting back into the PAC with a road doubleheader at Thiel next Saturday afternoon.
