NCCAA REGIONAL TO BE DECIDED SATURDAY,

GAMES 1 AND2 SPLIT

Beaver Falls, PA - With a trip to West Palm Beach on the line in the NCCAA East Regional tournament, Geneva and Mt. Vernon Nazarene split the first two games of their best of three series on Friday. Geneva held on for a 5-4 victory in eight innings and game one, while the Cougars came back for a 5-0 victory in the night cap. Geneva moved to 21-11 on the season, while Mt. Vernon improved to 17-13.

Mt. Vernon jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game one with three runs in the third inning. Geneva cut the lead with a run in the fourth on an RBI single from Kim Slater. Slater struck again in the fourth as Geneva took the lead with three runs of its own. Slater came through with a two-run single to give the Golden Tornadoes their first lead of the game. Mt. Vernon tied the score with a run in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly. Geneva got the game winner on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ashley Archer that plated Bridget Beachy with the deciding tally.

Archer pitched the first six innings and gave way to a new pitcher after allowing a lead off single in the seventh. Rebekah Wahl closed out the inning, but Archer re-entered the game in the eighth. Wahl was credited with the victory and Archer picked up the save. In seven innings of work, Archer allowed six hits and struck out six.

In game two, Geneva could never get its offense on track and came away with just four hits and no runs. Mt. Vernon took advantage of four Geneva errors for five unearned runs. The big blow came in the fifth when Staci Graham hit a grand slam to put the Cougars up 4-0 for a lead they would never relinquish.

Wahl was the hard luck loser despite allowing zero earned runs and striking out a pair of batters. The loss put an end to Wahl′s personal seven game winning streak as she fell to 9-4 on the season.

Geneva and Mt. Vernon will conclude the best of three series on Saturday morning at 10:00 am with the winner advancing to the national tournament next week in Florida. Malone College will also visit College Hill on Saturday. The Pioneers will play Mt. Vernon at noon before facing off against Geneva at 2 pm.
