GENEVA SPLITS WITH WAYNESBURG
IN AN OFFENSIVE SHOWCASE
Beaver Falls, PA - A total of thirty-three runs were scored in a doubleheader between Geneva and Waynesburg at 33rd Street Field in Beaver Falls. Geneva came away with one out of two games, losing the first game 12-7 and rebounding with an 8-6 victory in the nightcap. Geneva remains at the .500 mark with an overall record of 14-14.
In game one, Geneva came up short despite a four run effort in the bottom of the ninth. Waynesburg got on the board with a run in the second and would never give up the lead. Geneva′s defense struggled at times, giving up runs in seven out of nine innings. The Golden Tornadoes crossed the plate two times in the sixth thanks to RBIs by Andy Hiskey and Andy Lubich. It looked like Geneva could make a game out of it in the bottom of the ninth when four runs scored. Too little too late was the story as Waynesburg closed out the inning to take game one. Dave Foss picked up the loss with four strikeouts on four innings of work. In spite of the loss, Geneva had great individual efforts by Joel Dille with three RBIs, Andy Lubich and Andy Hiskey with two RBIs apiece.
Game two put an end to a six game slide by the Golden Tornadoes. Derek Sumner had a hard fought six innings pitched, striking out six, and allowing six earned runs in a no decision. Justin Montgomery would take the mound in the seventh and allow only two hits in three innings to get the win. For Geneva′s offense, Joel Gatti started things off right with a homerun in the first. Waynesburg managed to get a run of its own in the first after an error and wild pitch. Trading runs would be the theme in this game, as Waynesburg managed to fight back to a tie on four separate occasions. The difference came in the seventh, when Andy Hiskey knocked in a run, giving Geneva a 7-6 lead that they would not let go off. Tadd Eyster scored after his second extra base hit of the game, to provide a two run cushion for the final inning. Geneva′s big hitters were firing on all cylinders including a four hit outing for Tadd Eyster, two RBIs for both Joe Jurinko and Andy Hiskey, and a homerun to top it off for Joel Gatti.
Geneva′s season thus far could best be described as streaky. At one point, the Golden Tornadoes took eleven out of twelve games in March. The month of April has had mixed results, including a recent six game slide. These two games with Wayensburg are the start of a six game home field stretch. If Geneva can string a few more wins together, it will put them in a good position to enter the NCCAA Playoffs. The next opportunity to add to the wins column will come on April 30th when Geneva hosts St. Vincent College.
