RAINCAN′T DAMPEN SENIOR DAYAS

GENEVASPLITS WITH SAINT VINCENT

Beaver Falls, PA - It was far from a perfect day for baseball at Geneva′s 33rd Street Field on Saturday, but the rain drops could not dampen senior day for six players who are winding down their collegiate careers. Playing through constant rain throughout the day, Geneva and Saint Vincent split a PAC doubleheader with the Bearcats taking game one 9-4 and Geneva rebounding for a 9-6 decision in the night cap. The split moved Geneva′s overall record to 15-15 with just one regular season doubleheader remaining on Monday.

Saint Vincent was off and running in game one before spectators were comfortable in their seats. The Bearcats plated four runs in the top of the first inning on the strength of five hits from the first seven batters. Geneva responded with a pair of tallies in the third inning on an RBI triple from Joe Jurinko and a run scoring single off the bat of Andy Lubich. Geneva drew within three runs before Saint Vincent put the game away with four runs in the final two innings. Joel Gatti picked up three of Geneva′s 12 hits, while teammates Phil Shallenberger, Andy Hiskey and Justin Acosta had two hits each. Dave Foss suffered the loss as he pitched into the sixth inning and allowed six runs.

Geneva got off to a better start in game two with a run in the first inning when Tadd Eyster scored after opening the game with a triple. Saint Vincent scored four runs in the fourth for a short-lived one-run lead before the Golden Tornadoes exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth frame. Eyster came up with a two-run single, while Joel Gatti and Joe Jurinko each plated a run with hits. Eyster finished the game with three hits and three runs scored, while Gatti also contributed with a trifecta of base hits. Derek Sumner went the distance for the victory. He allowed six runs and struck out ten batters for the win.

Geneva will host Point Park University at 33rd Street Field on Monday in the regular season finale. The Golden Tornadoes will then get set to host the 2008 NCCAA National Tournament in the middle of this month.
