EXTRA INNING DISAPPOINTMENT, GENEVA FALLS TO CHOWAN IN NINE, PLACE FIFTH AT NATIONAL TOURNAMENT

Struthers, OH - Geneva′s baseball team may have saved its best action of the season for exactly the right time, but the Golden Tornadoes came up on the short end of a 5-4 decision to Chowan to see its post-season run come to an end. On the second day of play at the NCCAA national tournament, the Golden Tornadoes split a pair of elimination games to bring home fifth place in the ten-team NCCAA national tournament. In game one, Geneva eliminated former AMC foe Cedarville University by the score of 10-8 with a six-run rally in the sixth inning. Geneva saw its post-season run come to an end in the night cap with a 5-4 extra inning loss to Chowan College in the night cap. With the split, the Golden Tornadoes saw its 2008 season come to an end with an overall record of 18-18.

In Geneva′s victory over Cedarville, the Golden Tornadoes trailed 8-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Geneva posted six runs in the inning with the key hit coming off the bat of the eventual winning pitcher. Phil Shallenberger launched a three-run triple to give the Golden Tornadoes their first lead since the first inning. Shallenberger, who came on in relief in the fifth inning, got the final seven outs to pick up the victory. Geneva′s offense also got a lift with a pair of hits each from Andy Hiskey and Derek Sumner. Shallenberger, who got the big hit, led the offense with three hits in the victory.

Geneva got off to a good start in the night cap as it posted three runs in the top of the first inning. Shallenberger, who finished off game one, got the start on the mound in game two and came up with another solid effort. The Golden Tornadoes saw that lead erased as Chowan posted a pair of markers in the sixth to tie the game at four. It remained tied until Chowan pushed across the game winner in the bottom of the ninth.

Day three of the NCCAA nationals will feature a winner′s bracket championship match-up between Mt. Vernon Nazarene and Malone with a loser′s bracket game set between Chowan and Indiana Wesleyan on Friday afternoon.
