SHORT IN LOSS TO SETON HILL
Beaver Falls, PA- In the long awaited home opener at the newly renovated Reeves Field, Geneva′s football team scored the first six points and the final 12 points of the game, but it was the 27 unanswered points in the middle that made the difference in a 27-18 Seton Hill victory. The win moved the Griffins to 2-0 on the season while Geneva dropped to 0-1.
The fresh paint in the new Geneva press box barely had time to dry before the Golden Tornadoes jumped out on top. On the first drive of the new season, the Golden Tornadoes raced 54 yards on seven plays to take a 6-0 lead. Matt Dean capped the drive with a two-yard plunge. Nick DiPietro′s extra point was blocked which started a bad trend on Geneva PAT′s on the night. Seton Hill responded just five plays later when Dave Wess snuck into the end zone for one yard to take a 7-6 lead. The Griffins kept piling on the offense with three more touchdowns to extend their lead to 27-6 at the end of the first half.
Geneva controlled most of the play in the second half and scored the only 12 points of the final 30 minutes. Gerard Muschette scored both touchdowns with the first rush coming from three yards out and the second explosive score came on a 76-yard scamper early in the fourth quarter. Geneva missed a two-point conversion after the first score and DiPietro hit the left upright after the next score leaving the Golden Tornadoes down by two scores.
Muschette finished the game with 82 yards on eight carries to lead the running attack. Through the air, sophomore David Girardi was 18-31 for 163 yards. The Griffins featured a dynamic duo attack in the backfield of Antwan Jones (138 yards/22 carries) and RJ Butler (94 yards/18 carries).
Geneva′s defense did force three turnovers. Most notably was the interception of Dan Terracciano and the subsequent 45 yard return to the Seton Hill three yard line that set up Muschette′s first touchdown. Aaron Tommelleo led the way with 16 tackles while Zach Feltrop chipped in with 11 tackles and one tackle for loss.
Things won′t get any easier for Geneva next week when the Golden Tornadoes travel to perennial Division III powerhouse Salisbury University for a 6 pm start.
