NO DAYAT THE BEACH, GENEVADROPS

48-6 DECISION AT 12th RANKED SALISBURY

Salisbury, MD -It was not quite the trip to the beach that Geno DeMarco and the Geneva football team had in mind on Saturday evening. Traveling over seven hours to face the 12th ranked Sea Gulls of Salisbury University, Geneva dropped a 48-6 decision. While most of the country was looking for shelter from ongoing rain showers, Geneva and Salisbury were looking for some shade as the game took place in 90+ degree temperatures just minutes from Ocean City, Md.

Geneva, suffering its most lopsided defeat since a 45-0 loss to California, PA on the opening week of the 2002 season, dropped to 0-2 for the first time since 1999. It′s only the third time in the 16 years under Geno DeMarco that the Golden Tornadoes have opened a season with back to back losses. However, Geneva does not have much to be ashamed of after losses to Division II Seton Hill and 12th ranked Salisbury University.

The tone for Saturday evenings contest was set early with a pair of 60+ yard touchdown runs for the Sea Gulls in the first ten minutes of the game. Salisbury extended its lead on the next to last play of the half on a tipped pass that was hauled in by William Midgette.

Salisbury picked up the only seven points of the third quarter to extend its lead to 27-0 before Geneva got on the board. Following a blocked punt from Brian Wilson, Matt Dean plunged into the end zone from two yards out to give the Golden Tornadoes their only points of the night. The Sea Gulls closed out the scoring with 21 unanswered points.

Geneva′s defense did not have an answer for most of the night against the potent running attack of Salisbury. The Sea Gulls racked up 484 rushing yards to just 38 yards on the ground from Geneva. Shelby Fisher (127) and Ronnie Curley (100) each surpassed the 100 yard mark on the ground.

Geneva generated 121 yards of total offense, including just 83 yards through the air. In his second start at quarterback, sophomore David Girardi was 15-33 with a pair of interceptions.

On defense, Zach Feltrop led the way with 11 tackles while both Brian Wilson and Dan Terracciano registered six tackles each. Feltrop recovered a fumble on the only takeaway of the night.

The Golden Tornadoes will enjoy their only bye week of the season next Saturday before beginning PAC play at Thiel College on September 27th. Geneva will return home on October 4th to face defending PAC champions Washington & Jefferson College.
