Beyond the Bend Update

From Jim Prince, Vice President of Operations
September 4, 2008

I′m pleased to report that the Beyond the Bend project is moving to the next phase. Phase I of the project, which focused on the realignment of Route 18 and the improvements to Reeves Field, is coming to completion. We thank the Lord for His provision during this time and the successful completion of this first phase.

We are now finalizing preparations for the start of construction of Phase II of Beyond the Bend, focusing on a new entrance into campus at the light, a pedestrian walkway, a new roadway to the south entrance, and the expansion of Alumni Hall parking lot. The project will be phased over the next 11 months, with construction this fall concentrating on the rotary at the base of 31st street and old Route 18, and the creation of a new road in front of the Stadium to the south entrance. Upon the completion of the rotary and the new road, the College will begin phasing in construction of the pedestrian mall walkway, new entrance at 31st street, and the new Alumni Hall parking lot. It is anticipated that the entire project will be completed by summer 2009.

New Traffic Pattern

This good news also brings important changes in traffic patterns that will impact how both vehicles and pedestrians access our campus. These changes will require both your cooperation and patience.

Please note: effective September 15, no vehicular traffic will be permitted within the construction zone. Below you will find a campus map reflecting streets closed (yellow & black) to traffic due to construction, as well as the new two-way traffic (blue) for access to campus. The central point of construction will begin at the rotary that will connect 31st with College Avenue.

Throughout the fall and winter months there will be two primary entrances (see blue pattern on the map) to the campus. The first entrance will be from 31st at the light into either Alumni Hall Parking Lot or Freshman Lot. No vehicles will be permitted to travel further down 31st street. The second entrance will be from the north on College Avenue at the entrance of Pearce Hall. Please note that when entering the campus by Pearce, the road behind Memorial Hall, McKee Hall and the Student Center will be two way. It′s important that you stay to the right as you drive and make sure to observe signs and markings.

Regarding the temporary traffic patterns we ask for your help as follows:

  1. Please be patient.
  2. Watch your speed.
  3. Observe and follow the posted signs.

As construction continues throughout the year we will keep you informed of important changes in schedules, as well as closing and opening of roads.

Along with the campus changes there are bound to be inconveniences. Once again, we thank you for your patience and ask for your prayers for safety for our construction workers, students, faculty and staff.

We are excited to see what God will do as a result of this important project!

This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.
