NAIL BITER ENDS IN DEFEAT AT WAYNESBURG

Waynesburg, PA -It must have been difficult for Geneva head women′s tennis coach Mandee Craft to divide her attention on Tuesday as almost ever match against Waynesburg was closely contested. Unfortunately for Craft and the Golden Tornadoes almost every close match went the wrong way in a 5-3 loss to the Yellowjackets. The loss dropped Geneva′s overall record to 6-5 with just two matches remaining in the season.

The day began with three hotly contested doubles matches. Chelsea Cover and Kara Zimmerman dropped an 8-5 decision while teammates Amy Weller and Jill Grabski fell 8-6 in number two doubles. The tandem of Maura McLaughlin and Bethany Ragonesi got Geneva on the board with an 8-6 victory.

Singles competition proved to be equally competitive. Cover dropped her match in two sets, but took her opponent to 7-5 in the second set. After winning the first set, Zimmerman lost the next two, including a tie-breaker loss in the third and deciding set. Amy Weller took care of her number three singles match in two straight as did teammate Maura McLaughlin. Jill Grabski split her first two sets, but ultimately fell in set number three. With the match already decided, Bethany Ragonesi had her #6 doubles match suspended because of darkness.

Geneva will host Saint Vincent on October 15th before closing out the regular season with a home match against Chatham on October 17th.
