ALLIT CAN HANDLE IN FINAL TUNE-UP, GENEVA
SURVIVES
BETHANYSCARE

Beaver Falls, PA - If you believe in a team looking past an opponent in anticipation of a big match, Geneva′s volleyball team may have been guilty of that very thing on Tuesday night. The Golden Tornadoes were given all they could handle by an upstart Bethany team but in the end Geneva survived with a 3-2 (19-25, 25-17, 25-20, 22-25, 15-11) victory. The win pushed Geneva′s overall record to 17-5 while Bethany fell to 4-18.

Why was Geneva perhaps looking past its opponent? The Golden Tornadoes are set to host the NCCAA Eastern Regional tournament this weekend with an opportunity to advance into the national tournament in December. Co head coaches Wendy Smith and Curt Conser were not worried about the weekend tournament as much as they were concerned with some lackluster play from a team that has been brilliant all season.

Geneva watched Bethany take the first game before rallying for wins in games two and three. After Bethany evened the match, the Golden Tornadoes scored the first three points in the fifth and deciding game and never trailed the rest of the way.

Freshman Rachel Kuegler led the offense with 14 kills while Adriane Blake added 13 kills in the victory. Brandi Snavely controlled the offensive attack with 35 assists for the Golden Tornadoes. On defense, Blake led the way with 21 digs while Snavely had 16 and Blair Bruce added 17 digs. Perhaps the most dominating performance of the night came at the net from Michelle Zimmovan. She picked up a season high six blocks while also contributing offensively with five kills. Geneva has also been dominant all season on the service line and Tuesday night the Golden Tornadoes combined for 12 aces, including a team best four aces from team leader Adriane Blake.

Geneva will take its shot against some of the best competition over the weekend at the NCCAA East regional tournament. The Golden Tornadoes will welcome Mt. Vernon Nazarene, Malone, Roberts Wesleyan and Nyack to Beaver Falls for the two-day, round robin event. Geneva will open the tournament on Friday at 4 pm against Malone College. The winner of the tournament will advance into the national tournament in Colorado in December.
