GENEVATAKES 3RD AT EAST REGIONALS,

MT.VERNON EARNS AUTOMATIC BID

Beaver Falls, PA -Geneva′s volleyball team had high expectations coming into the weekend and the NCCAA East Regional volleyball tournament. The Golden Tornadoes finished the weekend in third place in the regional after splitting four matches. Coming off a two-match split on Friday, Geneva turned the trick again with a 3-0 loss to eventual champion Mt. Vernon Nazarene and a 3-0 victory over Nyack. The split moved Geneva′s overall record to 19-7, just one win shy of the third 20-win season in five years.

Mt. Vernon Nazarene took home the east regional trophy with a perfect 4-0 weekend performance, including a 3-0 victory over Malone in the title deciding match on Saturday. The title ensures Mt. Vernon′s spot in the NCCAA national tournament in Colorado in December.

As for Geneva, it came out a bit sluggish against Mt. Vernon in the first match of the day on Saturday morning. Geneva dropped three straight games (25-17, 25-18, 25-17) to drop out of championship contention. To the credit of the Golden Tornadoes, they quickly rebounded for a 3-0 victory (25-11, 25-19, 26-24) over Nyack in the final match of the tournament to insure third place.

In the loss to Mt. Vernon, Adriane Blake led the way with 13 kills while Brandi Snavely came up with 31 assists. Blake also led the defense with 14 digs in the loss.

Things certainly turned around against Nyack as Geneva came up with 20 service aces by the team, including Blake′s team leading eight assists. At the net, Rachel Kuegler picked up nine kills and teammate Laura Zerbe came up with six kills. Snavely was again productive with 22 assists.

Geneva will turn its attention back to the PAC next week when it hosts Waynesburg on Tuesday night. Following a trip to Thiel, the Golden Tornadoes will return home next Saturday to host Thomas More.
