Geneva College Golden Tornadoes (1-5)

vs.

Saint Vincent College Bearcats (1-6)

October 25, 2008 - 1:00 pm

Chuck Noll Field - Latrobe, PA

It has been said in sports that there is no such thing as a good loss. Geneva may have come as close to a good loss as possible. Unlike the previous game against Grove City, Coach Geno DeMarco can take many positives away from The Golden Tornadoes 34-28 loss at the hands of Waynesburg last Saturday night. The first positive being the obvious fact that the game was close. Geneva was a play or two away from a victory. The next positive being the performance of sophomore quarterback David Girardi, who was 21 of 30 for a career-high 271 yards and three touchdowns. Another positive is the Golden Tornado secondary that held the Yellow Jackets to just 95 yards passing and a pair of interceptions.

On the other hand Saint Vincent does not have much to write home about after its 72-20 defeat courtesy of Washington & Jefferson. The Bearcats would probably like to forget about the game that saw them give up over 700 yards of total offense. Saint Vincent may only be 1-6 but three of its five conference losses have been by 15 points or less. Two of those being against Grove City and Waynesburg teams that Geneva has already faced.

On offense Girardi will be looking to build on his performance against Waynesburg. He found senior receiever Luke Duriancik seven times against Waynesburg. Duriancik continues to lead the Golden Tornadoes with 23 catches. Girardi also hooked up with freshman reciever AJ Delmonico for two touchdowns last Saturday.

The Saint Vincent defenese is anchored by freshman linebacker Anthony Johnson. Johnson has a team-leading 54 tackles. The Bearcats also get a good effort from sophomore defensive back Josh Diamond, who is second on the team with 50 tackles.

It is tough to say who will be the starting quarterback for Saint Vincent as freshmanquarterbacks Jake Smith and Kevin Corona have split time this season. Corona played against Washington & Jefferson last week but the two both performed against Waynesburg the week before. The Bearcats like to go to junior wide receiver Rob James and junior tight end Jake Gabelt. James and Gablet both have 12 receptions on the season. The Saint Vincent rushing attack is led by freshman running back Zach Mihalko and his 225 yards rushing. An even bigger threat may come from freshman running back Jairus Marlow. Marlow is averaging an

impressive 6.9 yards per carry. Its the same old story for the Geneva defense. Senior linebacker Zach Feltrop, after getting eight more tackles against Waynesburg, continues to lead the team with 55 tackles. Sophomore linebacker Chance Kelosky also gave a solid six tackle performance last Saturday. Feltrop and sophomore defenseive lineman Adam Rose also lead the Golden Tornadoes with 6.5 tackles for a loss.

The Bearcats are in their second season after bringing the football program back in 2007 after a long hiatus. Last season Geneva got the best of Saint Vincent with a 56-27 shootout victory at Reeves Field. The Golden Tornadoes amassed 328 yards on the ground and the Geneva defense held the Bearcast rushing attack to just 71 yards. The Golden Tornado and Bearcat series dates back to 1930. Geneva holds a 6-4-1 advantage over Saint Vincent in the all time series. Before the 2007 season the teams had last played in 1962.

Next week Geneva takes a trip to West Virginia to face the Bethany Bison. The Golden Tornadoes return home on November 8th for game against the Thomas More Saints. Kickoff is set for 1:30pm. Saint Vincent will continue to feast on home cooking next week when it takes on the Thiel Tomcats.
