LATE COMEBACK WASTED AS GENEVA FALLS
TO PITT-GREENSBURG IN FINAL SECONDS
Beaver Falls, PA - If this is what interim head coach Amy Russin has to look forward to all season, the first year coach will be a nervous wreck by the new year. Russin watched her team rally from eight points down late in the second half only to see Pitt-Greensburg spoil the home opener party with a last second bucket to escape with a 60-58 decision. The loss dropped Geneva to 2-1 while UPG improved to 2-0 with a pair of victories in as many nights.
Both teams came into action with some fatigue as Pitt-Greensburg was coming off an opening season victory on Monday night, while the Golden Tornadoes were playing for the third time in four nights. In a game that featured six lead changes in the first half, Pitt-Greensburg was able to overcome a pair of seven point deficits in the first 20 minutes to get to the locker room with a 33-31 advantage.
The Bobcats extended that lead to as many as eight points and never relinquished the lead in the second half. Leading 58-50 with just over four minutes to play, Pitt-Greensburg allowed Geneva to creep back into the game. The Bobcats were just 3-12 from the foul line in the second half and committed 11 turnovers in the final 20 minutes. Geneva took advantage of the miscues and Beth DeLuca knocked down a 23 foot jumper with 14 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score.
Much like they did all night, the Bobcats rushed the ball back down the floor and Amanda Sheaffer took the ball off of an offensive rebound and dropped down a 12 footer that proved to be the difference maker with 3.7 seconds remaining in regulation.
Rachel Barry led Geneva with 14 points while Val Hamilton chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds. Geneva shot just 34% from the field, including 4-16 from three-point range. Renee Rawding, who injured her foot late in Monday′s victory, scored nine points in 25 minutes of action. Michawn Rich also posted nine points to go along with her team leading 12 rebounds.
Pitt-Greensburg was led by Kelsey Wilcox′s 14 points. Sheaffer scored 12 in the game, including the biggest deuce with just seconds remaining.
The Golden Tornadoes will enjoy a week off before hosting Penn State Beaver at Metheny Fieldhouse next Tuesday night.
