TURNOVERS COSTLY IN LOSS AT W & J
Washington, PA - One of the main keys to winning basketball games on the road is limiting turnovers. On Saturday afternoon, the Golden Tornadoes broke the cardinal rule and were unable to overcome 29 turnovers in a 94-82 loss to Washington & Jefferson. The loss dropped Geneva to 3-3 on the season while the President′s improved to 6-1.
Just three days after dropping a 10-point decision to previously winless Grove City, the Golden Tornadoes found their offense but were unable to come up with any defensive answers against Washington & Jefferson. Geneva shot 57% from the field for the game, including a mark of 64% in the second half. From long range, the Golden Tornadoes buried 12 three point field goals. W & J, however, attempted 22 more shots from the field and managed to make 24-28 foul shots on its way to winning its sixth game in seven tries.
"We just didn′t do a very good job against their early pressure," said head coach Amy Russin. "When you get down by so much, so early it is never an easy thing to come back. But, I was proud of our effort in the second half as we played one of the best teams in the conference head to head after a poor start."
Geneva got a balanced scoring attack led by a career high 19 points from Christine Carugati. Michawn Rich and Beth DeLuca each added 12 points, while Val Hamilton added 11 in the loss. DeLuca as a perfect 4-4 from beyond the three-point line.
Washington & Jefferson featured the two-headed monster of Maggie Gibson and Emily Hays in the post. Hays scored 24 points while Gibson added 21 and they both finished with nine rebounds. Kennan Killeen put up 16 points from her point guard position.
The Golden Tornadoes will look to get a victory next Saturday as they host Bethany College at 5:30 pm before enjoying a three week lay-off for the Christmas holiday.
