DIALING LONG DISTANCE, GENEVA TAMES TOMCATS

Greenville, PA - Geneva College′s men′s basketball team has not enjoyed any success this year away from home. On Saturday afternoon, the Golden Tornadoes used some long distance dialing to get their first road win of the year by the score of 88-71 over Thiel College. The Golden Tornadoes moved to 4-13 on the year while Thiel fell to 1-14.

Something had to give on Saturday as Geneva was in search of its first road win while Thiel was trying to pick up its first win on the home floor. The Golden Tornadoes prevailed thanks to a first half long distance barrage that opened up a 22-point lead at the break. With leading three-point shooter Dave Phillips on the bench for most of the first half with foul trouble and long distance threat Bryan Hill still sidelined because of injury, nobody would have thought Geneva could put together such a shooting effort. It was sophomore Emilio Nardi that provided the spark with 15 points on 5-5 shooting from three point range in the first half. In all, the Golden Tornadoes knocked down 8-12 shots from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes. "We got a huge lift from Emilio today," said head coach Jeff Santarsiero. "We needed someone to step up and make shots and we got that today. I was also pleased with the defensive effort in the first half and we finally put together a solid 40 minutes. It feels good to get on that bus with a win. It has been a long time in coming."

Coach Santarsiero was prepared to pull out all the stops as he introduced his team to brand new road uniforms before the game. "The old ones hadn′t won anything and now our new uniforms are undefeated. Whatever it takes, we will try to do what we can to get a victory."

New uniforms aside, Golden Tornadoes did a great job in spreading the offensive wealth. In addition to Nardi′s 17 points, brother Justin posted a 19 point effort to lead the way. The Nardi combination combined for 36 points to pace the offense. Rich Colick added 14 points for the victors. Thiel was led by Sean DeVinney′s 18 points and Cory Chaffee, who added 16 for a Tomcats team that has now dropped 12 straight games.

Geneva will begin a three-game home stand on Wednesday night when they host Westminster College at 7:30. The Golden Tornadoes will also welcome Grove City and Washington & Jefferson in the next two weeks.
