HANGING ON, GENEVA HOLDS OFF CHARGING TITANS
FOR TWO-POINT VICTORY
Beaver Falls, PA - A forty minute game was just exactly what Geneva College′s women′s basketball team needed for a 67-65 victory over Westminster on Wednesday night. If the game had gone a minute longer, the Golden Tornadoes may have seen their entire lead disappear. As it was, Geneva held off the Titans to move to 8-7 on the season while Westminster fell to 6-9.
Geneva had things well in control throughout the first half and took a 38-20 lead into the break. The Titans began to creep back into to the game midway through the second half, but the Golden Tornadoes quickly responded by moving their eight point lead back to 14 with back to back three point field goals from Rachel Rouan and Liz DePietro. It was DePietro who came up big for the Golden Tornadoes all night with a season high 14 points, including a 4-7 effort from three-point range. After Geneva once again extended its lead into double digits, Westminster again rallied in the final minutes and pulled to within a pair when Beth DeLuca extended the lead to four points with a pair of free throws with 35 seconds remaining. Westminster got within a bucket and forced a loose ball but was unable to capitalize as time ran out.
Michawn Rich led Geneva with 17 points and nine rebounds. In addition to DePietro′s 14 points, Beth DeLuca chipped in with 13 points and Rachel Barry added 11 in the victory that put an end to Geneva College′s quick two-game slide.
Westminster got 17 points from Amy Dolsak and 16 each from Emily Dolsak and Gina Brunetti. It was a pair of Brunetti three-point field goals in the final minutest that kept the Titans breathing.
Geneva forced 21 Westminster turnovers and they held the Titans to just nine first half field goals that helped build the 18 point lead.
Geneva will continue its three game home stand with a visit from Grove City on Saturday and from Washington & Jefferson next Wednesday night.
